US Approves Three New Nuclear Reactors

Excellent news! We're back on the road to the future, where our power generation systems are concerned. The detour we drove off on in the 70's has finally come back to the main highway!

Most excellent indeed. I have never heard one good reason why we should not rely more on nuclear power.

Except that one time they were about to build a nuclear power plant and then realised it was sitting directly over a fault line.

GLORY BE.

I just hope they don't get torpedoed by some local group of NIMBY ignoramuses or Green fanatics. That can happen in the approvals process, very easily.

Pardon my ignorance, but, what is a NIMBY?

Maybe, but I know environmentalists who favor nuclear power, because it's cleaner than the alternatives.

So, how long before we start getting the "China Syndrome" marathon?

You know the environmentalists won't be happy until they have driven mankind back to the stone age, if not driven into extinction.

Am I the only one that thinks that the Three Mile Island accident (the only nuclear accident to ever occur on U.S. soil, with a total casualty rate of zip) and the release of The China Syndrome (the only U.S. movie about a nuclear accident) occuring within a month of each other is more than a coincidence?

...are you suggesting that the green fanatics arranged the TMI accident?

I agree that we need more nuclear power, but I actually dropped in to ask a question...

Do you know anyone with the screen name "katzpaws"? This person's profile and journal seem to indicate that they are Russian, but have added me as friend. I can't imagine why or where they might have come across my profile.

I think it's amusing that I saw this story the day after I saw this other one ... http://technology.newscientist.com/article/dn13545-nanomaterial-turns-radiation-directly-into-electricity.html

If that latter one plays out "spent fuel rods" are not going to be a "storage nightmare" but a valuable energy resource!

Good idea, but they need to be guarded very carefully from any idiots - government officials and terrorists alike - who want to use them to make nuclear weapons or push the button. We don't need any more of those.

If oblama gets in you can bet it will get strangled. The jackass took a stab at the refinery they're trying to get built here in Indiana. They've spent a fortune on it already with all the regulatory BS and have followed and gotten everything approved but that isn't 'good enough'.

On the flip side I hope the builders of this have a clue because if the contractor screws it up like marble hill there will never be anymore. If they screw up I'm wanting them put up against a wall and shot.

America comes back to the current century. You will never know how flabbergasted I was when I first saw one of GE's coal commercials.

I support nuclear energy. The alternative people suggest is coal. WTF?

However, I can't believe you haven't posted about the lameness that was "Earth Hour". I'm a dutiful greenie recycling, bus-taking, packaging-reducing, organic-growing type and *I* thought Earth Day was retarded!

Whoops, Earth Hour. Although Earth Day is stupid too.

When I was a kid in the 70s, we were all going to die because of the oncoming new ice age. DDT was going to make everything extinct. Then the world's population was going to starve us all to death by 2000. I believe in not soiling our nest the earth, but FUD does not charm me.

You mean that someone else remembers all the catastrophes of yesteryear that were all gonna kill us, and how they all turned out? And here I thought I was the only one.

Re: I only post when I agree with you

Earth Hour was not about cutting emissions - it was just a publicity and awareness-raising exercise. In that respect I think it worked exactly as intended. The fact you're mentioning it is proof of that. Get people thinking about it, is the aim.

The "oncoming new ice age" between the 50s and 70s we now know was a temporary anomaly in a global temperature rise that's been sharply on the increase since the mid-1800s. Specifically it was caused by two large volcanic eruptions in quick succession that temporarily increased the Earth's reflectivity and cut the amount of sunlight

At university I actually showed that the five biggest volcanic eruptions since the 1700s all correspond exactly with these "oncoming ice age" periods. The difference in the 1970s, as now, is that we have a hysterical mass-media feeding a hysterical populace.

But lest you think my response indicates some fanatically mindless pro-greenie stance, let me just say I support the alternative energy of coal. ;)
